BuzzFeed Picture Editor Asks About Buying From CEN During Early Client Relationship

This February 2014 email chain records a BuzzFeed picture editor contacting CEN after an email bounce and asking whether someone could get in touch “about buying from CEN”. CEN’s online desk replies the following day, explaining that there appeared to have been email problems and saying that CEN would be able to set up a deal. The document is significant because it records BuzzFeed approaching CEN as a potential or continuing content supplier in ordinary commercial terms, roughly a year before BuzzFeed published its later allegations about the agency. In the wider evidence chain, it helps show that BuzzFeed’s relationship with CEN was not limited to later scrutiny or criticism: its own editorial staff were actively seeking access to CEN material and discussing buying arrangements before the hostile narrative developed. Read alongside the related 2013 BuzzFeed/CEN image-licensing and invoicing records, it helps document BuzzFeed’s prior use of, and interest in, CEN content before the same organisation later presented CEN as an unreliable source of viral material.
