BuzzFeed Picture Editor Asks CEN To Check Background Of Ukraine Swimming Pool Photos

This 4 August 2014 email records a BuzzFeed picture editor asking CEN for help checking the background of images said to show teenagers in Ukraine turning an entire living room into a swimming pool by covering it with film and filling it with water. The email says the pictures were credited to another agency, but adds that BuzzFeed was unsure whether that agency was still in business, and asks CEN whether it had any background information about the photographs. CEN then forwards the request internally with the note: “Is this something you can look at?” The document is significant because it shows BuzzFeed treating CEN as a practical source-checking and picture-industry contact in August 2014, during the same broad period in which BuzzFeed staff were also developing suspicions about CEN-linked viral stories. In the wider evidence chain, it helps document the contradiction between BuzzFeed’s later public framing of CEN as an unreliable viral-news supplier and its own newsroom’s earlier reliance on CEN for exactly the kind of background checking, source knowledge and agency-market intelligence that viral-picture work required.
