BuzzFeed Picture Editor Asks CEN If It Owns Rights To Cow-On-Roof Images

This 2 February 2015 email records BuzzFeed picture editor Matthew Tucker contacting CEN’s online desk about two images connected to a “cow stuck on a roof” item, asking: “Do you own the rights for these two pics?” The document is significant because it shows BuzzFeed still treating CEN as a practical rights and picture-source contact in early 2015, only months before publishing its later allegations about the agency. In the wider evidence chain, it helps document that BuzzFeed’s relationship with CEN was not merely hostile or investigative: BuzzFeed staff continued to approach CEN in ordinary editorial terms for rights clarification, image sourcing and possible use of viral picture material. Read alongside the earlier BuzzFeed/CEN licensing, invoicing, alert and source-checking records, it adds to the pattern showing that BuzzFeed had direct working knowledge of CEN as a supplier and rights contact before publicly presenting the agency as an unreliable source of viral content.
