This Source Library item is a web screenshot of a BuzzFeed News editor’s note headed “A Note To Our Readers”, written by Mark Schoofs and posted on 27 June 2020, then updated on 2 September 2020. The note was published after BuzzFeed reviewed work by Ryan Broderick and found that a series of articles did not meet its editorial standards because they failed to “more clearly attribute phrases and sentence construction to material previously published by other news organizations”. It says BuzzFeed News had added editor’s notes to the affected stories identifying the original source, states that BuzzFeed policy forbids copying, pasting and passing off material as original work, and says the changes followed a “thorough investigation”. The screenshot lists affected articles on coronavirus conspiracies, 5G, WhatsApp, a pro-Trump blog, impeachment conspiracies, Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump, TikTok, Aaron Alexis, Nepal, gonorrhoea and Julian Assange. Its significance in the CEN/BuzzFeed Source Library is that Broderick was one of the BuzzFeed figures whose name appears in the wider CEN-related material, while BuzzFeed itself had presented the CEN article as a moral and editorial intervention about fake news, attribution, verification and standards. The document is useful because it records BuzzFeed publicly acknowledging serious attribution failures involving one of its own journalists, several years after BuzzFeed had applied a far harsher standards narrative to CEN and Mike Leidig. It should not be overstated as evidence about the CEN article itself, but it is relevant contextual material when assessing BuzzFeed’s institutional culture, double standards, and the gap between the standards it claimed to enforce against others and the standards it later had to enforce inside its own newsroom.
