Telegraph Romanian Baby-Buying Investigation With Michael Leidig Byline Explains Later Concern Over Heidi Blake’s Bulgaria Sting

This archived screenshot preserves a Telegraph investigation by Michael Leidig titled “‘I know one with blonde hair, green eyes, very beautiful, you will love her’: gypsy joy”, concerning an attempt to investigate whether children could be bought in Romania in the aftermath of earlier orphanage and adoption scandals. The screenshot is significant because it carries Leidig’s own byline and records an assignment he later came to regard as an example of a flawed older style of entrapment journalism: offering money to poor Roma families might create the appearance of a child-sale market without proving whether the families would ever have acted without the financial inducement, or whether they genuinely intended to give up a child at all. The item matters in the wider evidence chain because it explains why Leidig was so critical when Heidi Blake and Jonathan Calvert pursued a similar approach years later in Bulgaria for The Sunday Times, by which point using undercover methods and financial temptation around impoverished families to dramatise child trafficking appeared even less defensible. Read alongside the later Guardian item about the Sunday Times sting being exposed by Bulgarian journalists, this screenshot helps document both Leidig’s direct experience of this form of reporting and his later view that serious public-interest concerns about child trafficking can be distorted or sensationalised by methods that risk manufacturing the very evidence they claim to expose.
