Press Gazette Report Records BuzzFeed’s Wide Disclosure Demands In The CEN Libel Case

This archived screenshot preserves Dominic Ponsford’s Press Gazette report titled “Buzzfeed accused of fishing expedition over request to see ten years of emails from news agency suing it for $11m”, published on 8 March 2017. The screenshot is significant because it records an early litigation-stage dispute over disclosure, where BuzzFeed sought ten years of CEN email correspondence while CEN’s position, as later set out in the wider evidence chain, was that BuzzFeed’s own disclosure was heavily redacted, partly withheld and produced in poor-quality PDFs that had to be searched manually. The item helps document the imbalance and pressure created by the legal process: CEN was asking for material relevant to how the BuzzFeed article had been produced, while BuzzFeed sought broad access to almost every aspect of CEN’s business, creating confidentiality and source-protection concerns for an agency built around journalists, contributors and media clients. Read alongside the later disclosure material, the item helps explain why the legal case became not only a dispute over defamation, but also a fight over access to the underlying evidence behind BuzzFeed’s narrative.
