This archived screenshot preserves Luke Lewis’s BuzzFeed post titled “8 Astonishingly Mean Mail Online Comments On Angelina Jolie’s Maste_”, one of a series of early BuzzFeed UK items ridiculing MailOnline, its readers and its style of tabloid online publishing. The screenshot is significant because it helps document two linked points in the evidence chain: first, that BuzzFeed entered the UK market with a visible editorial appetite for taking on MailOnline by mocking and criticising its content and audience; and second, that Lewis, as head of BuzzFeed UK, was publicly hostile towards a title whose content he also criticised in correspondence with others, including Guardian media contacts. The later irony is that Lewis subsequently ended up working for MailOnline as head of social media, making this screenshot useful as a record of the earlier rivalry, hostility and hypocrisy surrounding BuzzFeed UK’s posture towards MailOnline before and during the wider CEN investigation, in which MailOnline’s use of CEN material formed part of the background.
