Guardian Screenshot Records Heidi Blake’s Bulgarian Baby Sting Backfiring

This archived screenshot preserves a Guardian/Media item titled “A Sunday Times sting ends up with the stingers being stung…”, about a Sunday Times investigation in which Jonathan Calvert and Heidi Blake set out to discover whether it was possible to buy a Bulgarian baby, only for Bulgarian TV station Nova and reporter Veronika Dimitrova to expose and film the undercover approach. The screenshot is significant because it records a reporting episode involving Heidi Blake before her later senior role in BuzzFeed’s investigation into CEN, and shows the risks of a sting-led, entrapment-style approach to foreign reporting, especially where vulnerable people and national reputation are involved. In the wider evidence chain, the item helps document the contrast between high-minded investigative claims and the practical methods used by some of the journalists later involved in scrutinising CEN: rather than building the story through deeper local reporting, the Sunday Times team pursued a cheap undercover route that could be, and was, publicly reframed in Bulgaria as foreign journalists trying to make the country look like a place where families sell their children.
