Alan White Buffoon Listicle Shows BuzzFeed Reporter Producing Cheap Viral Content While Accusing CEN

This archived screenshot preserves Alan White’s BuzzFeed post “37 Things That Will Make You Grin Like A Buffoon”, published on 9 April 2015, only shortly before BuzzFeed published its attack on CEN. The item is significant because White was one of the bylined reporters accusing CEN of producing cheap, questionable viral news, while at the same time he was himself writing lightweight BuzzFeed listicles built around internet jokes, memes and shareable online material. The screenshot matters in the wider CEN/BuzzFeed evidence chain because it helps document the double standard at the heart of the BuzzFeed attack: CEN’s viral material was treated as evidence of a corrupt or unserious news operation, while BuzzFeed’s own traffic-driven viral output was treated as ordinary platform content. Read alongside the wider Alan White and BuzzFeed listicle material, this item helps show that the CEN allegations were not made from outside the viral-content economy, but by people actively working inside it.
