The article identified Chinese artist Han Bing as the figure behind the cabbage-walking images and treated the earlier “lonely teenagers walking cabbages” version as a misunderstanding. Its significance for the BuzzFeed/CEN narrative is that this later correction was itself too neat. As set out in the book, Han Bing later indicated that he had not intended a single fixed meaning for the work, that most people never answered when asked why they were walking cabbages, and that he was comfortable with the loneliness interpretation being accepted by others. The record is therefore useful because it shows how a second narrative — the confident debunking of the first — could also become oversimplified. The cabbage story was not straightforward proof of fabrication, but an example of how viral foreign-news material, artistic ambiguity, reader interpretation and media correction could all be flattened into whichever version best suited the outlet using it.
