This document is a 1 December 2014 BuzzFeed email exchange with the subject “Verification CEN and Emergent”, in which Tom Phillips introduced Craig Silverman to Alan White while describing Central European News as a source of dubious viral stories that “look unlikely but hard to definitively debunk”. It is included in the Source Library as source/evidence material connected to the early development of BuzzFeed’s investigation into CEN, before the article was drafted or published. It records Phillips telling Silverman that BuzzFeed had been thinking about doing a piece on CEN, introducing Alan White as BuzzFeed UK’s viral-news specialist, and raising both CEN and Emergent in the same discussion. It also records Silverman replying that he had “a couple of other CEN stories” to add to the list, that he thought “CEN needs to be exposed”, and that he wanted to discuss Emergent because he was “currently working to raise financing for it” and looking for partnerships. It is relevant because it shows that, from an early stage, Silverman’s involvement in the CEN investigation was intertwined with his separate interest in promoting and financing Emergent, while BuzzFeed was already approaching CEN through a framework of suspicion rather than starting from a neutral evidence-led inquiry.
