Silverman Seeks Help Finding Lucita Sandoval Through Indirect Argentina Contact

This document is a 25 March 2015 email from Craig Silverman to Lyng-Hou Ramirez with the subject “Argentina Help locating Lucita Sandoval”, sent almost exactly one month before BuzzFeed published its article about Central European News. It records Silverman trying to find assistance through a Spanish-language media contact after earlier saying he wanted to “nail down” CEN’s involvement in the Lucita Sandoval story and hoped to obtain a quote from the woman involved about the impact of what BuzzFeed was treating as a false claim. It should be read alongside BuzzFeed_005578 and the related Spanish-language cuttings, because it shows that BuzzFeed’s attempt to check the lead Lucita anecdote still depended on indirect media contacts, online traces and a hoped-for route through someone connected to La Nación, rather than direct contact with Lucita Sandoval, the person in the images, local police, school officials or others with first-hand knowledge. It is relevant because, at a late stage in the evidence trail, BuzzFeed was still trying and apparently failing to verify one of its most important examples at source, while the wider Spanish-language publication record showed the story had circulated broadly and remained disputed rather than conclusively resolved as a hoax.
