This 25–26 March 2015 email chain shows Heidi Blake forwarding Alan White and Robert Colvile an earlier January 2015 exchange with Mike Leidig, in which Leidig had contacted her about possible investigative material after her move from The Sunday Times Insight team to BuzzFeed. Blake describes the email as sent “in confidence” and says Leidig had spoken to her the previous year about a child-trafficking investigation, then followed up through LinkedIn to see whether future investigations might work for BuzzFeed. Leidig’s email says CEN already did “a lot of work for buzzfeed” but that this was mostly tabloid material used to fund other reporting, and says he would be happy to work for free on the right investigation if it helped build the reputation of the work. Rather than causing BuzzFeed to pause and consider whether CEN also produced serious investigative material or whether Blake’s existing professional connection complicated the framing, the internal reaction is immediately sceptical: Blake says it is “quite interesting” that Leidig defended the tabloid stories without being asked, Alan White replies “Crikey”, Tom Phillips says “Blimey”, and then asks whether there is evidence that any of Leidig’s investigations “ever saw the light of day”. The document is significant because it shows potentially complicating context — Leidig’s prior relationship with Blake through the Sunday Times Insight world, his offer of investigative material, and his explanation that tabloid work funded more serious reporting — being treated not as a reason to test the premise more carefully, but as material to be examined for weakness or turned back into the emerging CEN narrative.
