This document is a 19 March 2015 email from Craig Silverman to Tanya Chen with the subject “Small request”, asking her to compare a CEN/Austrian Times story and MailOnline version about a Chinese mother whose daughter was allegedly bitten by a tour guide with the original People’s Daily Online source. Coming roughly five weeks before publication, after many months of BuzzFeed/CEN discussion and investigation, Silverman specifically asks Chen to compare quoted material and other quotes in the Austrian Times version to see whether they match the original Chinese report, asking: “Is this real translation or something else.” It should be read alongside BuzzFeed_001420, where Chen had already said she only spoke Mandarin at about “5th grade proficiency”, could recognise a few characters, and probably could not translate written text, and BuzzFeed_001456, where Silverman himself acknowledged in a verification discussion that “you still have to” talk to the source. It is relevant because it shows BuzzFeed still pursuing serious suspicions about CEN’s Chinese-source stories through indirect internal language checks shortly before publication, despite the limited Chinese-reading ability of the staffer being asked to assess the translation issue, rather than through direct reporting from the original source, witnesses, police, officials or people involved.
