BuzzFeed Still Chasing Austrian Charity Checks Days Before Publication

This 21 April 2015 email chain shows Craig Silverman following up with Juliane Leopold, founding editor of BuzzFeed Deutschland, about attempts to contact Helfen Wir and check the Austrian charity arrangements connected to Journalists Without Borders. Silverman says BuzzFeed is “working to finalize the story this week” but still wants to know whether Leopold has had any luck getting someone at Helfen Wir to answer the phone. The earlier thread shows Leopold trying numbers, finding one invalid, noting that the Facebook page looked outdated, and saying she would try again. Silverman also asks whether it is common in Austria for one registered charity to accept donations on behalf of another, saying it “could be entirely possible” that the arrangement was normal or “kind of weird”. The document is significant because it shows BuzzFeed still relying on an in-house German-language contact for Austrian source checks only days before publication, while important questions about local charity practice, contact with Helfen Wir, and the practical operation of the arrangement remained unresolved. It also shows the gap between BuzzFeed’s confidence in the published charity angle and the limited verification recorded in this chain.
