This 4 May 2015 email chain shows BuzzFeed discussing how to use a confidential CEN client memo that had been forwarded to the team by a source, following publication of the BuzzFeed CEN article. The memo, sent by Mike Leidig to CEN clients on 29 April, explained that CEN had expanded its editorial operation, created new celebrity and sport departments, reviewed internal procedures, and added further checks around contact details, original links, screenshots, original-language text and local verification. Rather than treating the memo as a confidential client reassurance note written in response to reputational damage, BuzzFeed discussed using it as fresh material to “keep it alive” before Alan White’s planned Poland trip. Robert Colvile suggested asking why CEN had changed its “entire ethical standards policy” if its internal review had found nothing wrong, while Craig Silverman said he would also like to ask Press Gazette whether it planned to update its article or do a follow-up. The document is significant because it shows the leaked memo being used as leverage for further coverage and pressure: CEN’s attempt to reassure clients and improve procedures was interpreted as evidence against it, while Press Gazette was identified as another route for extending the story.
