This 26 March 2015 email chain shows Craig Silverman telling Heidi Blake, Tom Phillips, Robert Colvile and Alan White that he had a “confirmed debunk” from photographer Gene Oryx. Silverman said Oryx had confirmed false names, false photographer credit, false details about the women losing their jobs, and false details about why the photographs were taken, concluding that “the only real things are the pics and the location they were taken”. The significance is that the underlying exchange appears far thinner than Silverman’s summary. Oryx’s original reply, in broken English, said only: “This is falce [sic]”, then identified one woman, said the blonde model did not want her name shared, and said he was the photographer. Yet Oryx appeared in at least some of the pictures CEN published, meaning he could not have been the photographer of those images, or at least not the only photographer. When Silverman asked whether anyone had sought permission to use the pictures, Oryx replied: “No, nobody.” From this limited exchange, Silverman produced a much broader internal account of what was supposedly false, including points Oryx had not clearly confirmed. Later legal questioning underlined the weakness: Silverman had not phoned Oryx, had not contacted him in Russian, had no further evidence beyond the emails and attachments, and accepted he could not be certain what Oryx meant by the one word “falce”. The document is therefore important because it shows one of BuzzFeed’s supposed strongest debunks resting on an ambiguous one-word response that was expanded into a fuller CEN fabrication narrative.
