This 17 April 2015 BuzzFeed email chain shows Alan White, Craig Silverman, Heidi Blake, Robert Colvile, Luke Lewis and Tom Phillips discussing a checklist of remaining work on the CEN article one week before publication. The document is significant because it shows BuzzFeed moving beyond checking disputed stories and into a strategy of contacting other publishers and mining rival newsroom records in order to demonstrate the “industrial scale” on which MailOnline, the Mirror and other outlets had used CEN material. Alan White says BuzzFeed would make a “mea culpa” about its own use of CEN, but asks how they can show “the industrial scale those sites in particular have used them or the number of shares”. Luke Lewis calls that point “really key” and asks whether Tom Phillips’s contact at Metro could “look at database”, showing BuzzFeed actively seeking information from staff at rival publishers to strengthen the article’s case against those same rivals. The chain also shows Heidi Blake advising BuzzFeed to go to the press offices of all outlets listed as having used “dodgy CEN stories”, not just the Mirror and Mail, while Robert Colvile says they needed to “push on the charity” and contact CEN co-workers or co-founders. The document is also useful because White says BuzzFeed needed to approach the “charities regulator in Australia”, apparently confusing Australia with Austria, where Journalism Without Borders was based. It should be read alongside the front-up, publisher-contact, charity and BuzzFeed prior-use documents, because it captures a late-stage action plan in which BuzzFeed recognised its own CEN use, but still focused on proving that rival publishers had used CEN at greater scale, while unresolved checks, charity questions, screenshots and external contacts were still being pursued only days before publication.
