Alan White Emails That Heidi Blake Wants Fewer Emails In Case Of Disclosure

This document is a 30 March–3 April 2015 BuzzFeed email chain with the subject “Re CEN Final - Invitation to edit”, sent during the final month before publication of BuzzFeed’s article about Central European News. It records Craig Silverman sharing a new “CEN Final” draft through Google Docs, Alan White saying there had been no reply yet from Michael Leidig, and the team discussing next steps including screenshots, possible “no surprises” correspondence and further contact. The most significant line is White’s 3 April reply saying: “Heidi’s advised us to keep all email contact to minimum from this point on in case we have to disclose it in court as it can be twisted out of context.” It is relevant because the advice to reduce the email trail was itself sent by email, and because it shows BuzzFeed staff were already thinking about future legal disclosure before publication. It also helps explain why the surviving written record may become thinner after this point: sensitive editorial discussion may have moved to calls or other channels once the team recognised that documented comments could later be scrutinised in court.
