BuzzFeed Editors Approve CEN Shrink-Wrap Photo Story Before Later Search For CEN Examples

This 21 May 2014 email chain shows CEN sending BuzzFeed a clearly labelled picture story about Japanese photographer Haruhiko Kawaguchi’s “Flesh Love” shrink-wrapped couples project, with Matthew Tucker telling colleagues they could use “all the copy and pics”, Alan White replying “God yes” and “Right on the list”, and Richard James describing the story as “too weird”. The document is significant because it records BuzzFeed staff, including Alan White and Richard James, knowingly receiving and discussing CEN-supplied material as usable editorial content before BuzzFeed later investigated CEN as a source of supposedly dubious viral stories. It should be read alongside later BuzzFeed/CEN documents concerning BuzzFeed’s search for examples of CEN material and its treatment by major publishers, because it helps document a practical contradiction in the evidence chain: BuzzFeed had direct internal knowledge of CEN content being taken, circulated and positively received inside BuzzFeed itself, yet that prior use does not appear to have been treated as relevant context when CEN’s publication history and editorial credibility were later scrutinised.
