BuzzFeed Uses Publisher Front-Up Reply To Bulletproof CEN Story Without Rethinking Narrative

This eight-page BuzzFeed disclosure document is an internal email chain from 22 April 2015 showing Alan White forwarding Trinity Mirror’s response to BuzzFeed’s questions about CEN-supplied stories to Luke Lewis, Robert Colvile, Tom Phillips and Craig Silverman. White’s covering line says: “Mirror response. Let’s look again at that baby story.” The document is significant because it shows how BuzzFeed used the front-up/right-to-reply process not simply to test whether its underlying narrative was fair, but to make the article harder to challenge by identifying weaker examples, modifying them, or removing them while preserving the broader allegation. The Mirror response complicated BuzzFeed’s framing by saying that, as BuzzFeed itself knew from personal experience, it was hard to verify every fact and detail in stories from other parts of the world, so publishers relied on established news agencies, especially for offbeat stories. Trinity Mirror also said it did basic fact-checking, undertook more detailed examination where serious allegations were involved, took its relationship of trust with readers seriously, and had asked CEN to investigate BuzzFeed’s allegations. BuzzFeed’s approach letter to the Mirror had listed stories it framed as having been proven false, partly false, or containing quotes of questionable provenance, including the Justin Bieber bear story, the Argentinian teacher sex-tape story, the Paraguay “baby” thief story, the Singapore underwear thief, the Chinese cheating husband story, the Russian nude photo shoot, the Indian castration story, the Macedonian castration image, and the Vienna sunbathing photograph. When the Mirror’s response created a problem with one of those examples, White’s instinct was to “look again” at the baby story. A fair reading is that careful journalists should recheck challenged material before publication. The deeper significance here is that the rechecking appears to have served the preservation of the wider narrative: weaker examples could be adjusted or removed, but the article’s central thesis remained intact.
