This 21 April 2015 email shows Alan White sending Associated Newspapers a detailed pre-publication right-to-reply letter about MailOnline and Metro’s use of CEN material. The letter lists multiple stories BuzzFeed intended to raise, including the Bieber bear attack, Lucita Sandoval, the Singapore underwear thief, the Vienna sunbather, cabbage walking and the pink kitten, and asks whether the relevant quotes, pictures or copy came from CEN and whether MailOnline or Metro had verified them. The document is significant because BuzzFeed was effectively passing a package of allegations to one of CEN’s biggest customers while still trying to establish whether key parts of that package were true. Much of the material had been gathered from online rumours, debunks, archive searches and secondary publication trails, and CEN’s failure to provide the detailed response BuzzFeed wanted meant those claims were being put to Associated Newspapers without BuzzFeed having fully checked or resolved them. In practical terms, BuzzFeed was telling a major CEN client that it was preparing to report that CEN was operating as a global source of fake or unreliable viral news, while still using the client’s own answers to fill gaps in the evidential chain. Sean Walsh, Director of Communications and Media Relations for DailyMail.com, acknowledges receipt and asks whether MailOnline is the only publication mentioned or whether BuzzFeed will include others who licensed CEN copy. White replies that he believes “there are 10 other publications mentioned besides MailOnline”. The email is therefore important because it shows the reputational danger of the front-up process itself: before publication, BuzzFeed was already transmitting serious, unresolved allegations about CEN to one of its biggest commercial relationships.
