This 21 April 2015 email chain shows Alan White and Tom Phillips preparing questions for the New York Daily News about changes to its Lucita Sandoval article. White says he is sending the extract to the New York Daily News and asks what changes were made to its article and why, after noting that the story had already been debunked locally in Argentina and that some sites had updated their versions. Phillips uses the Wayback Machine to compare earlier and later MailOnline versions, says the article appears to have been updated between November and December 2014, and adds that a screenshot of the original Mail article has been saved to the Google Drive folder. The document is significant because it shows BuzzFeed still reconstructing the publication history of the Lucita Sandoval story three days before publication, using archived versions of client and publisher pages to work out what had changed and when. It also shows how much of the case was being built from secondary publication trails, archived webpages and follow-up questions to publishers, rather than from a settled original-source chronology at that stage.
